Brew up some art at The Market Place Social!
Published: 22 March 2024
Last month a five-week art project, ‘Brew up some art’ launched at The Market Place Social.
‘Brew up some art’ is our latest wellbeing workshop creating work around the universal topic of tea!
In partnership with Dead Pigeon Gallery, the project created work to exhibit on The Market Place Social walls, celebrating our love of tea and the associations we have with 'putting the kettle on', using sketch, paint and collage.
The workshop had a great turnout, with nine people getting involved and contributing towards the project.
Run by Jayne Lawless from Dead Pigeon Gallery, this is the fourth art project she’s hosted in Speke and Garston for SLH. We caught up with her to find out why art projects are integral to building community;
“The whole idea behind the teapots was doing something to bring everyone together, in a shared space. Coming up with a communal theme, when we're all so diverse, was difficult but the one thing that happens at The Market Place Social, is people come here to drink tea and coffee.”
“With the community shop next door, we all know how valuable teabags are, and the connotations associated with 'putting the kettle on', have made a brilliant starter for the workshops.”
“We can't quantify the benefits of doing workshops like this; people go home feeling a little bit more relaxed, having spent a morning thinking about teapots. It might sound daft but it's a vehicle to sit together in a room. It’s about the act of putting pen or paint to paper and not worrying about the outcome; once you remove the worry, people produce great artwork.”
